Fall 2019 Lay Servant Ministry Classes

Saturday, November 2 and Saturday, November 9, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Appleton First UMC, 325 East Franklin Street, Appleton, WI

To register, please email the teacher of the class you’d like to attend to introduce yourself and give your contact information. A link for the book you will need to purchase for each class is provided below. Please register and purchase your book by Monday, October 21, 2019. Both days must be attended in order to earn credit toward Lay Servant Certification.


Basic Class

This is the foundational class to become a Lay Servant and learn more about your gifts and opportunities to use them as a servant leader.

Preaching Class

This is one of 6 advanced classes required to become a Certified Lay Servant or Speaker (or anyone wanting specialized training) to help develop a deeper understanding and practice of preaching.

Teachers: Pastor Amy Powell and Ron Powell


Polity Class

This is one of 6 advanced classes required to become a Certified Lay Servant or Speaker (or anyone wanting specialized training) that helps explain the why and how United Methodists are so "methodical" in our "holy conferencing" and are connected beyond the local church to improve and increase our witness to the world.

Teacher: Pastor David Leistra


Aging and Ministry in the 21st Century

This is an advanced class for Certified Lay Speakers or anyone wanting specialized training to start and/or lead ministry to older adults that helps foster growth in their faith and fruitfulness.

Teacher: Barbara Mamorow


Heritage (History) Class

This is one of 6 advanced classes required to become a Certified Lay Servant or Speaker (or anyone wanting specialized training) to help develop a deeper understanding of the history of the Methodist Church.
